East End prices rise 800% in 30 years

5th September 2014

Research has found that homes in the East End of London have risen in value more than properties in any other area of the capital during the housing boom.

Since 1987 the total value of homes in Hackney has risen by 864%, with Tower Hamlets and Southwark also beating Kensington & Chelsea and Westminster at 661%. Over the same period the value of all property across Greater London rose by 453%. One two-bed converted warehouse flat off Shoreditch High Street, which sold for £60,000 in 1998, fetched £836,000 when sold this summer - a 1,295% increase. London is now home to 35% of Britain’s total property by value, with homes in Hackney, Tower Hamlets and Southwark worth more than all of those in Wales. Research suggests the total value of property in London is expected to top £2trn by 2017.
