The London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games may be long over, but the regeneration of the area has only just begun. Mayor Boris Johnson has written of his desire to see the Stratford site become an “Albertopolis of the East”, fit for the 21st century. The original Albertopolis grew up around South Kensington after the Great Exhibition of 1851, meant to showcase, in the Mayor’s words, Britain’s “industry and craft and design and skill of all kinds in manufacturing and the plastic arts, and to lengthen Britain’s lead as the workshop of the world”. The transformation has already begun, with the iCity complex home to the headquarters of BT Sport, and the 700 artists resident at Hackney Wick; next year will see the arrival of V&A East, a museum linked to the Victoria & Albert Musuem across town, and a new UCL campus coming to the land between the Stadium and Stratford station.
