Three-quarters of postcodes see house price rises

3rd January 2014

House prices in three-quarters of English and Welsh postcodes finished 2013 higher than at the start.

The steepest increases were in London and the South East, where prices rose by 9.1% and 5% respectively, while prices in the North fell by 0.5%. The figures, to be published today, reveal widespread price rises this year compared with only 20% of postcodes recording increases last year and 12% in 2011. Buyer numbers are expected to grow in the first quarter, on continued talk of improving market conditions and low mortgage rates. Property prices nationwide rose by 4.4% over the year and lifted demand by 20%, the fastest rate of increase for three years. Supply grew by only 6% over the same period, the slowest for over a decade.
