Wapping – the number one address for Docklands living, but left behind when the Square Mile began to reform itself a few miles east in Canary Wharf – looks likely to thrive again in the near future.
“Fortress Wapping”, News International’s former printworks, is being transformed into London Dock, a 15-acre “quarter” with 1,800 homes, a civic square, cafés, restaurants and new pedestrian routes down to the river. The first homes are due to be launched this spring. Accompanying this just to the east is the long-awaited revival of Tobacco Dock; a listed warehouse complex set to be turned into “the Covent Garden of the East”. Around 800 luxury homes are planned, along with boutiques and designer hotels.
