London Mayor Boris Johnson has introduced a 12-step London Rental Standard to protect tenants against exploitation.
The steps include landlords and agents behaving professionally and respectfully towards their tenants, and making all fees and costs clear upfront, as well as dealing with necessary repairs quickly. “We really want to boost the professionalisation of the sector,” says Richard Blakeway, deputy mayor for housing and land. An online database will be launched early next year for tenants to check whether a landlord has signed up to the code.
