The National Landlords Association (NLA) has criticised councils in London for failing to tackle the problem of rogue landlords.
Figures obtained under the Freedom of Information act show at least 17,683 complaints were made to local authorities about the conditions of privately rented properties in the capital last year. However, only 282 landlords were either prosecuted or are in the process of being prosecuted as a result. Adam Smith, from the NLA, commented: “If councils are genuinely committed to clamping down on rogue landlords they need to stop tinkering around the edges of the problem and begin proactive enforcement and prosecution in earnest”.
