2013 will also live in the memory for Dublin businessman Tom Ryan’s announcement of plans to build a 75-storey residential tower block on the western side of Canary Wharf.
Costing £850m, the Hertsmere Tower will be the largest such building in Europe, and the centrepiece of a residential revolution in the Canary Wharf and Docklands areas. Just to the east of it, construction on the Wood Wharf development should begin toward the end of the year, with 884 residential units spread across three Herzog and de Meuron-designed buildings. Completing the picture is the Royal Wharf riverside site, where permission has already been granted to build 3,385 homes.
