Affordable housing targets cut across London developments

Back to news

The Standard reports that London’s affordable housing shortage is being worsened as developers renegotiate planning agreements and reduce affordable home commitments on major regeneration schemes. At Canada Water, the proportion of affordable homes has fallen from 35% to 9%, while other large developments have also secured reductions. Supporters cite rising construction and fire-safety costs, while critics warn the loss of affordable housing will have long-term consequences for local communities. The paper highlights wider concerns about housing affordability, planning policy and the challenge of meeting demand across the capital.
